9 Milestones in the Evolution of Paul Rudd

In Our Idiot Brother, Paul Rudd plays the shaggy-haired titular character, a guy so naively idiotic that he hands a uniformed police officer marijuana after the cop claims to be having a bad day. How did Rudd transform himself from a socially conscious law student who romances his hot ex-stepsister in Clueless to a socially imbecilic drifter who yearns for his dog Willie Nelson? You can always trace a direct line through a few important roles to illustrate what led to an actor’s current success. As such, let’s look at nine pivotal performances that track the evolution of Paul Rudd. Clueless (1994) After a series of small parts in TV movies and a recurring role on the short-lived Fox sitcom Wild Oats, the University of Kansas graduate earned what would be his breakthrough part in Amy Heckerling’s ’90s gem Clueless. Rudd reportedly auditioned to play Murray (which went to Donald Faison), Elton (Jeremy Sisto) and Christian (Justin Walker), but Heckerling cast the 25-year-old as Alicia Silverstone’s onscreen ex-stepbrother and eventual love interest — a role that earned him the title of MTV audience crush object. Over a decade later, Rudd would re-team with Heckerling less successfully for the straight-to-DVD flop I Could Never Be Your Woman. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995) Just two months later, Rudd (who was still being credited as Paul Stephen Rudd at the time) returned to the box office for his first leading role. In the sixth installment of the Halloween franchise, which was filmed before Clueless, the Kansas U. grad replaced Brian Andrews as Tommy Doyle, the adult version of the child that Laurie Strode babysat in the first Halloween film. Although critics hated the movie, it did decently at the box office, coming in second to David Fincher’s Se7en its opening weekend. Cider House Rules (1999) Four years later — after playing the object of Jennifer Aniston’s affection in, well, The Object of My Affection and appearing in MTV’s ensemble bomb 200 Cigarettes — Rudd earned his first role in a marquee drama. In Lasse Hallstrm’s adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name, Rudd played Charlize Theron’s apple farm owner boyfriend who leaves her to fight in World War II. Cider House Rules would be the most critically successful drama of Rudd’s career and also his only Academy Award-winning title. (The film won Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Michael Caine.) Wet Hot American Summer (2001) At this point in his career, Rudd was being recognized as a serviceable dramatic actor and romcom love interest but he had not yet had the chance to display his serious comedic talents. That would change with David Wain and Michael Showalter’s summer camp cult classic Wet Hot American Summer. Opposite Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Elizabeth Banks, Michael Ian Black, Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler and more, Rudd played an inattentive boyfriend/lifeguard who rocks a sweet jean jacket. While the film received negative reviews at the time of its release, it has since accumulated a devoted following that is praying for a prequel.

As If! All of Cher Horowitz's Clueless Outfits in Under One Minute

Clueless is, without a doubt, the best dated movie of the ’90s. The lingo, costuming, and music are the stuff of time capsules, but the film itself feels like a righteous love letter to the post-grunge era. I revisit it whenever there’s a spare moment. In this new video, we see just how many outfits Beverly Hills teen Cher Horowitz (played with unwavering perfection by Alicia Silverstone) can squeeze into a 90-minute movie. Hint: It’s a lot. That’s 50 complete outfits. If I had to pick a favorite, I’d go with the yellow plaid blazer with matching yellow vest, but this is like picking between children. I’d sooner offer myself to the gestapo than choose between my Alaia and white Calvin Klein dress. Also: Shout-out to Elisa Donovan. You did underrated work in this movie. [via Jezebel]

Redmond ONeal Sentenced To One Year Of In-Patient Rehab Over Recent Arrest

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Redmond ONeal is heading back to rehab. The son of actor Ryan ONeal and the late Farrah Fawcett pleaded no contest to felony possession of heroin and being in possession of a firearm on Wednesday morning in Los Angeles, Access Hollywood has confirmed. As a result, a judge sentenced Redmond to a one-year, in-patient rehab program and five years of probation, the District Attorneys office confirmed to Access Hollywood. Redmond is grateful for the opportunity to receive additional intensive treatment, his lawyer, Richard Pintal, told Radar Online, which first reported the news. As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Redmond was arrested on Aug. 2 in Santa Monica. A spokesperson for the Santa Monica Police Department previously confirmed to Access that Redmond was pulled over at 8:45 AM on Aug. 2, for failing to stop at a red left turn arrow at Lincoln and Olympic. Redmond was pulled over at the 600 block of Olympic Drive, not too far from the police department. A motor officer determined ONeal was on probation, and therefore he had consent to search him and the vehicle he was driving, the spokesperson told Access. The officer found a controlled substance believed to be heroin in the car. Prosecutors charged Redmond days later with felony heroin possession. He was also charged with being a felon, in possession of a firearm. Copyright 2011 by NBC Universal, Inc. 'Hound Dog' lyricist Leiber dies at 78

Jerry Leiber (right), who alongside Mike Stoller, penned such indelible rock and roll standards as Elvis' hit song "Hound Dog," died Monday.Influential lyricist and producer Jerry Leiber, who penned such indelible rock 'n' roll standards as "Hound Dog," "Jailhouse Rock," "Stand by Me," "Spanish Harlem" and "Love Potion No. 9" alongside partner Mike Stoller, died Monday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles of cardiopulmonary failure. He was 78. Throughout the 1950s and into the '60s, the Leiber-Stoller tandem was instrumental in bringing rhythm-and-blues music into the pop realm, and vice-versa, writing hit songs for artists on both sides of the color line. Leiber's early lyrics tapped into a comedic and often double entendre-laden teenage idiom -- from the anti-chores lament of "Yakety Yak" to the rather brazen extended STD metaphor in "Poison Ivy" (both recorded by the Coasters) -- while other works, such as "On Broadway" and "Is That All There Is?," displayed a darkly poetic insight. Jerome Leiber was born in Baltimore and raised largely in the black areas of the city, cementing his love for race-repertoire music and R&B. As a teenager he moved to Los Angeles, where he met the then college-aged Stoller while a student at Fairfax High School. With Stoller as composer and Leiber as lyricist, the two began writing R&B songs during 12-hour marathon sessions in Stoller's home; 1952's "Hard Times" and "Kansas City" were their first hits. The Leiber and Stoller-penned "Hound Dog" was a hit for Big Mama Thornton in 1953, but it was Elvis Presley's 1956 version that truly set the duo's name in lights, though Leiber was annoyed by Presley's changes to the original's lyrics. According to the duo's joint autobiography, they were informed of Presley's success with the song immediately upon arriving in New York after surviving the sinking of the SS Andrea Doria (the two were returning from a Paris meeting with Edith Piaf, who had notched a hit with a French version of their "Black Denim Trousers and Motorcycle Boots"). In 1953 Leiber and Stoller had established their own record label, Spark Records, which was later absorbed into Atlantic Records. The duo composed a string of hits for the Drifters and the Coasters while at Atlantic and served as mentors for a young Phil Spector. After leaving Atlantic in the '60s, the duo also ran the Tiger and Daisy labels, and, with George Goldner, the Red Bird and Blue Cat imprints, home of the Shangri-Las, the Dixie Cups and the Ad Libs. Though their hitmaking cooled as the 1960s progressed, the two once again hit paydirt as composers of "Is That All There Is?" (made famous by Peggy Lee in 1969) and as producers of 1972's "Stuck in the Middle With You" by Stealers Wheel. The duo's music formed the backbone of 1995 jukebox musical "Smokey Joe's Cafe," which ran on Broadway for more than 2,000 performances. Leiber and Stoller were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1987, and they were granted a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1994. The two published "Hound Dog: The Leiber and Stoller Autobiography" with David Ritz in 2009, and last season's "American Idol" featured an episode dedicated entirely to the Leiber and Stoller catalog. New Screenplay For Rambo 5

Conan writer pens Last StandEighteen months ago, in the run up to The Expendables, Sylvester Stallone told Empire that John Rambo's adventures were over. It's pretty well done; I'm about 99% sure there won't be any more, he said. I'm very happy with the last Burmese episode, and another film might be misinterpreted as an unnecessary and mercenary gesture. I don't want that to happen. And yet, and yet.... Conan the Barbarian writer Sean Hood has just submitted his screenplay for Rambo: Last Stand to Millennium. FEARnet slipped a casual mention into an interview with Hood about Conan (there's also a line about a potential film based on another Robert E Howard character: that'd be Kull, folks!), and the writer was happy to expand on that info a little, after a request from Empire for clarifiication. Firstly, this isn't just preemptive wishful thinking on the part of Millennium: Stallone was involved in getting the ball rolling. I met with Mr Stallone twice last year, Sean tells us. He gave me a book, an older screenplay, and about twenty pages he'd written himself to use as inspiration for the last chapter of the Rambo saga. What's the book? Sean won't say, but does reveal that this Rambo 5 isn't based on any of the ideas that have been bubbling under in the recent past. It isn't the south-of-the-border action-fest that would have seen Rambo rescuing a young girl from a deadly drugs cartel. Nor is it the the sci-fi tinged Savage Hunt (which always seemed like a bizarre idea anyway). And it isn't the prequel that Stallone was pondering last summer. It's more in line with the small-town thriller of First Blood, says Sean. Rambo: Last Stand is a long way from a done deal or a green light though. One screenplay doth not a movie make, and Sean is careful to stress that As of now, I don't know whether Mr Stallone will actually do it. Right now, as I understand it, he has his hands full with Bullet to the Head and Expendables 2. But Millennium films did hire me to complete the screenplay and realise his story, and my hope is that he'll eventually be inspired to do one more Rambo film, with the tone of Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven. What say you, readers? Did John come full circle when he came home at the end of Rambo, or is there room for one more mission? Give us your thoughts in the comments below, and watch this space for further updates.

Sins Of My Father

This is the incredible story of Pablo Escobar, the infamous boss of Colombia's Medellin drug cartel, told for the very first time by his son, Sebastian and his widow Maria Isabel Santos. In Nicolas Entel's film Sebastian tells of his extraordinary childhood, growing up with a father he loved but whom he knew to be Colombia's enemy number one. He tells of times of extraordinary luxury and extravagance, and other times on the run. And Sebastian and his widow open the family vaults to share their private and long hidden archives. But this is also the story of two of Escobar's most prominent victims, the Minister of Justice and a politician about to be elected President of Colombia, as told by their sons. They were among hundreds that Escobar had killed in the 1980's. The film follows Sebastian as he tries to break the cycle of revenge and assassination by seeking reconciliation with the sons of his father's victims.

New Immortals Trailer Marches In

Henry Cavill fights for the futureWe got a look at a chunk of Tarsem Singh's gods 'n' warriors battle epic Immortals at this year's Comic-Con and were also treated to some solid face time with the disgracefully attractive cast. Now there's a new trailer online for everyone to enjoy, which can be watched over at MSN. To be honest, there's not an awful lot of new material to be found here, mostly just some of John Hurt in voiceover mode explaining the plot and then lots of people fighting. But then, that's what's going to sell the film, isn't it?We're introduced to a time when the Gods led by Zeus (Luke Evans) have defeated their enemies, the Titans, and banished them to a stony prison deep inside a mountain. But now troublemaking, world-threatening king Hyperion (Mickey Rourke, snacking on scenery for all he's worth) is on the hunt for mythical weapons he can use to free the Titans and invade... Well, pretty much everywhere. Who can stop him? While the Gods can't intervene directly in the affairs of men, they do pick a champion, Theseus (Henry Cavill), who must lead an army against Hyperion's forces. So there's naturally a load of swords clashing, spears getting chucked and Freida Pinto's soothsayer being mysterious, encouraging and sexy. Take a look at the trailer and let us know what you think. Immortals will stride into our cinemas on November 11.

Phil Rosenthal: Conveying Raymond Is not Only for Fans of Everyone Loves Raymond

Phil Rosenthal When Everyone Loves Raymond creator Phil Rosenthal was requested to assist adapt the show for any Russian audience, he was ecstatic. But that feeling did not last lengthy."I had been quite flattered the Russians want me to visit, until I heard which i needed kidnap and ransom insurance," Rosenthal informs TVGuide.com having a laugh. "Then, my anxiety about getting kidnapped was changed by my anxiety about the things they would caused by the show."Watch Everyone Loves Raymond clips within our Movie GuideFrom casting to costumes, everything on the way was a little of the fight. (And also the language barrier did not help any.) Fortunately, Rosenthal, also the show's executive producer, introduced a movie crew to document every seafood-out-of-water moment. The end result: Conveying Raymond, a movie that's more an search for the struggles of communication than the usual celebration from the lengthy-running CBS sitcom."Whenever you create a documentary - if you are likely to be honest - you do not know really what you are getting,Inch Rosenthal states. "You need to be lucky that after you turn your camera on, you are getting something useful. I figured we'd something which transcended the expertise of just our show. Forget it's another country. I am talking about, everyone has [communication] problems in their own individual house."Those of course was the fundamental conceit of Everyone Loves Raymond, which starred Ray Romano like a New York sportswriter whose dustups together with his wife (Patricia Heaton), jealous brother (Kaira Garrett) and obtrusive parents (Doris Roberts and also the late Peter Boyle) were grounded in tangible, everyday problems. Which was an idea the Russians had issues with, Rosenthal states.Ray Romano confirmed for Middle premiere"As we had any success within America, we believe it is because it had been relatable towards the American audience," Rosenthal states. "Therefore it is not too [the variation] needed to be faithful towards the American version I simply wanted so that it is relatable for their audience. The best way to do that's to maintain it within the real life, to request: 'Could this happen?' But that appeared to become an excessive amount of to request."I did not determine if the issue was they did not appreciate this idea of realism and naturalism or they did not wish to understand," Rosenthal continues. "Which was the greatest factor to beat - determining, 'Was it me and my impractical anticipation as being a foreigner within this country? Or did they simply not need for connecting?AInchIt is merely a mild spoiler to express that eventually, Rosenthal and the friends found some mutual understanding. And today, versions of Everyone Loves Raymond are now being modified in Belgium, Egypt, Israel and India."They are saying this may finish up being probably the most created show on the planet,Inch Rosenthal states. "Everyone has parents, you will find there's mate, we now have brothers and sisters. They are universal styles. We attempted very difficult within the show to really make it very specific to the lives.... but we attempted to create the show possess a timeless quality. It appears to become working all over the world.InchDoes which means that we'll obtain a follow up? Still Conveying Raymond? "I was really just speaking in regards to a sketch for Funny or Die for your very factor," Rosenthal states. "However I have decided to only visit the nations that I must eat in."Conveying Raymond can be obtained on DVD and Blu-ray. Watch a clip:

Jesse Eisenberg will be The Double for Richard Ayoade

Jesse Eisenberg has landed the (dual) lead role in Richard Ayoade's indie take on Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The Double.Ayoade was probably best known as an actor in The IT Crowd (and as a Total Film columnist, of course) before his astonishing directorial debut Submarine, which arrived earlier this year. His adaptation of Joe Dunthorne's novel was heartfelt, stylish and immensely cool, and it's fascinating that he's now turning his attention to one of the great novellas of Russian literature. The Double concerns a man whose life begins to fall apart when a doppelgänger of himself arrives at his office and starts doing his life better than he does, and there is a 'fantastic' tension running throughout (ie is it all in the guy's imagination?)This project sounds doubly exciting when you consider the casting, as Eisenberg should be a perfect match for the character's nervy sensibilities, as well as Ayoade's offbeat sense of humour. The Vulture report that revealed this news doesn't go on to elaborate on any details, but we can't wait to find out how Ayoade will tackle the story.Eisenberg has been a busy chap of late: you'll see him in 30 Minutes Or Less, Free Samples, Predisposed and Woody Allen's The Bop Decameron before The Double.

Simon Cowell States X Factor Auditions Left Him Traumatized

La, Calif. -- Simon Cowell rose to fame when you are very, very blunt together with his critiques on The American Idol Show, but he says the low age limit 12 about the X Factor has triggered him to consider loads of abuse in the new crop of youthful participants. Weve needed to tell the 14 year olds, Are you kind in my experience? since they're more lippy than every other participants Ive met during my existence. I felt traumatized following the auditions, the Brit told a panel of reporters via satellite from London to Beverly Hillsides, for that FOX part of the tv Experts Association session on Friday. Simon stated once the show hits the environment this fall premiering on September 21 reality TV fans will see him ripped apart by a minumum of one youthful person in the New England. There is that one kid in New You are able to Youll see him, hes just a little rapper. He absolutely chewed me apart, Simon stated. However I that can compare with that. An earlier promo for that show, launched to experts now like a teaser to advertise this program, demonstrated Simon and the fellow idol judges/mentors throwing out a couple of barbs in the challengers. The Brit stated his number of idol judges/mentors L.A. Reid, Paula Abdul and Nicole Scherzinger is not attempting to be mean so as distinguish The X Factor in the cuddlier Idol. We didnt make an intentional effort to become mean, I am talking about, thats just in us. Its precisely what happens on the program, he stated. The participants are mean to us and often weve been harsh to them. Its cooperation, but we didnt need to make, Oh, theyre a warm show, so were a chilly show. The entire point was I believe its vital whenever you make reality TV that it is just as real as you possibly can. Simon revealed on Friday that he's still in talks with Mariah Carey arrive at The X Factor, and lastly confirmed she was about the original narrow your search for any idol judges table slot. We all do have well-known people helping us on the program and there is a section on the program Im wishing Mariah will get involved with, Simon stated. And shes experienced since Day 1, however she selfishly became pregnant and thats why she didnt finish up a judge. Throughout the TCA session, the Brit also addressed the departure of Cheryl Cole, who offered like a judge about the X Factors stateside edition for two main dates before she was changed by original co-host Nicole. It wasnt just me, there have been a couple of people who made the decision, whenever we were filming the show, that Cheryl, we felt was destined to be much more comfortable doing the United kingdom compared to American show, and after two metropolitan areas, I offered her the task in the United kingdom, which initially she recognized, after which regrettably, if this went public, discussions fell apart, he described. But she was offered the opportunity to return to America, but for several reasons made the decision to not. Simon stated British pop star Cheryls departure had nothing related to gossips she and Paula Abdul were live training at the begining of audition metropolitan areas. Whether it would be a question of not making with Paula, i quickly wouldnt be on the program, Simon stated. Which had nothing related to it The fact is that I figured Cheryl coming back to the United kingdom will be a large headline, I figured it could have been great for the show there, great for her and if you need to make choices like a producer, make hard choices, and public choices, and Im the first one to admit that if you achieve it wrong, you need to go about the face, but with that said, Nicole is a thought. VIDEO: Funny Or Die Takes a Necessary Stand Against Planking

I hate meaningless memes that are supposed to be funny, aren’t funny, and survive in pop culture for too long a time thanks to unfunny people. I’m talking about the #whitepeopleproblems, the #epicfails, and the lives of most hashtags. Just stupid. But even those don’t burn me quite like planking, the fad where you lay across some sort of funny divide (a pair of park benches, between two roofs, whatever), and photograph yourself. Oh, it is dumb! Big and dumb. And now folks like Kyle Gallner are taking a stand at Funny or Die with a new — if not funny, then just necessary — protest video. In fact, they should’ve eschewed humor altogether on this one. This is a grim, compulsory mission, and laughter just kills its potential for planking’s utter annihilation. The presence of Kyle Gallner, a quirky weirdo on Veronica Mars and in Jennifer’s Body, makes the message even more urgent. Stop with the planking, everyone. Get the hell up. [via FoD]

No Funny Girl for Lea Michele, But Here are Three Other Barbra Movies That Could Suit Her

Yes, Funny Girl, the 1968 debut vehicle for Barbra Streisand that won her an Academy Award, is getting a remake — but not with the McKinley High belter you expect. According to E!, Lauren Ambrose, best known for Six Feet Under, is close to getting the part. Weird! But never fear, Lea Michele: We can think of three Streisand films that deserve remakes and you on the marquee. Hello, Dolly We know Michele will play off her Spring Awakening/Glee credibility and power at least one Broadway remake on the big screen, so why not choose a Streisand with slightly less exposure than Funny Girl, but just as much of a Great White Way legacy? As Dolly Levi, a role originated by the perhaps-actually-immortal Carol Channing, Michele could pump up the grandiosity of the original film with some MTV editing (like on Glee) and va-va-voom stage presence. What’s Up, Doc? Truthfully, Michele could stand to get away from the bland trappings of overblown musical theater. Her character on Glee is often more cutting and sarcastic than a traditional Broadway powerhouse, and that’s why Peter Bogdanovich’s 1972 comedy What’s Up, Doc? is right for her. Streisand’s role of Judy Maxwell, the trouble-attracting dame who is expelled from a number of colleges (but still manages to hum a tune here or there), provides a forum for subtler whizzbang that could ease viewers away from Ryan Murphy’s bursting bacchanal. Plus, I’m personally interested to see who the modern-day version of Madeline Kahn would be. Jayma Mays? Ari Graynor? Watch live video from It came from the seventies! on Justin.tv Nuts I like remakes of films that weren’t great the first time. That makes a remake practical, right? Nuts is bland, dated, and formulaic, but the concept of a delirious call girl with a shaky past is a cinematic evergreen. (“Love… soft as a witness stand…”) Michele could bring convulsive characterization to the role of Claudia Draper, which is a form of theatricality that could best suits a scenery-chewer such as Rachel Berry. Maybe she’ll say “Don’t judge my b—-jobs!” with similar brio! · Glee’s Lea Michele Not Starring In Funny Girl: So Who Is? [E!]
