Homeland Bosses around the Season Finale: Showtime Wanted Damian Lewis for an additional Year

Damian Lewis, Claire Danes [SPOILER WARNING: This story discloses key plot components from Sunday's season finale. Read at the own risk.]Homeland's first season finale posed the question: Would traitorous Marine Sgt. Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) really do a suicide bombing fond of the v . p . from the U . s . States? See where Homeland rated within our countdown of the greatest Television Shows of 2011The only-on-TV answer: It depends. Although Brody tried to blow themself and also the veep to smithereens, nothing happened when he turned the turn on his snazzy new suicide vest, because of a annoying loose wire. Barbara (Claire Danes), whose instincts are apparently infallible, designed a last-ditch effort to prevent Brody by telling his wife (Morena Baccarin) and daughter (Morgan Saylor) of her accusations about his terrorist ties. We all know Barbara is appropriate, obviously, but from inside, she looks a bit nuts - and she or he knows it. Within the episode's final scene, Barbara decides to endure electroshock therapy to make certain that individuals good instincts (also known as manic episodes) will not get her into anymore trouble. But simply prior to the anesthesia becomes effective, she takes note of that Brody stated "Issa," the title of Abu Nazir's boy, in the sleep, piecing together Brody's revenge-based motive for betraying his country. We requested Howard Gordon and Alex Gansa, co-designers of Homeland and former 24 producers, to describe why they made a decision to keep Brody alive, what Barbara will remember after her treatment and just how naive and/or suspicious Brody's family will really become in Season 2. (Plus: That which was everything in regards to a mole?)Had you been nervous whatsoever about how exactly much story you resolved versus the number you left hanging?Alex Gansa: It's a bit like testing the soup. It needs to be perfect. We thought at the minimum the attack which was guaranteed within the pilot would either succeed or fail in the finish of year. We kind of felt, at this very fundamental level, that needed to be satisfied. And definitely, there's a panic attack, and also the attack is stopped via a confluence of occasions and also the direct actions in our heroes. What amount of the ending are you aware prior to the season started?Gansa: We understood that Brody would instigate a panic attack from the people who were accountable for Issa's dying - that there is likely to be an individual reason behind his actions. We would never know, for instance, he would be putting on a suicide vest. We thought there might be one other way he would remove the audience responsible. After we made the decision around the suicide vest, it opened up up lots of great options for all of us, the most crucial one being that people could put him inside a room using the v . p . and also have the vest malfunction.See Danes and Lewis within our Best Performances of 2011 photo galleryWhich also keeps Brody alive for an additional season...Gansa: Which was the truly amazing factor concerning the vest. We constantly our cake and eat it too. [Brody] turned the switch. Which means he would undergo using what he'd planned to complete, however it did not work. To ensure that appeared to provide us two excellent achievements: One, it resolved his story. ... And 2, it opened up up the potential of redemption.Have you ever think about a scenario where Brody was effective and died?Gansa: Absolutely. Whether Brody would survive the finale was virtually a wide open question up to we recognized the vest could malfunction. We would likely have ended it and introduced another thing next season, much in the same manner the Wire would introduce totally new stories every year. Which was really up for grabs for any very long time this year. Ultimately, we felt that there are just more to inform between Brody and Barbara. Therefore we made the decision to help keep him alive. Also, Showtime wanted Damian Lewis around for an additional year.Who could blame them? What exactly does the following chapter of Barbara and Brody's story seem like?Howard Gordon: The secret will probably be to obtain Barbara into the intelligence community in some way, because she has been ostracized and excommunicated from that type of work. So that's our narrative hurdles. The 2nd factor is how you can chart Brody's new strategy. He's now dedicated to Abu Nazir that he will move ahead within this political way, really playing the lengthy game. So we are going to need to work out how individuals two different strands from the story will intersect.I imagine you cannot just switch a switch and obtain Barbara in the CIA.Gordon: You will find there's very specific solution for your.Gansa: Jack Bauer was exiled virtually each year [on 24] and needed to be cut back in some way. [Laughs]Showtime orders Season 2 of HomelandLet's discuss Carrie's decision to endure electroconvulsive therapy. Is she really attempting to get a grip on her disease or perhaps is she in some manner attempting to erase her emotional link with Brody?Gordon: It is both things. I believe she's in a reason for her existence where her illness gets even worse - where it's cost her career. It is also cost her the connection using the another individual, that's, Brody, that she's attached to. I believe she's just in the finish of her rope. She's made the decision to get this done because she really, desires to get her existence back and wishes to try to control her feelings and also to control her trajectory on the planet. She can't persist at these extremes.Saul (Many Patinkin) very pointedly pointed out the potential of loss of memory. Is the fact that certainly the path you are selecting to follow along with next season, with Barbara failing to remember her last-second realization about Brody's link with Issa?Gordon: Absolutely. Among the unwanted effects of ECT treatments are short-term loss of memory. Clearly, it leaves Barbara within the second season using the audience waiting for now where she takes note of these items - where she relearns it or begins to start to suspect Brody again of really being the man she thinks he was.I believe it is good that Brody's family "knows" his secret, even when they do not believe Barbara. What type of tension will that produce next season?Gordon: The household will probably be requested to get together around Brody's campaign. They are likely to unnaturally be produced to do something as though it's all regulated for just one and something for those. However I think Dana especially includes a fairly obvious sense that her father is not declaring that everything. That's [the purpose] from the kind of ambiguous scene around the roof in the finish. So, what's the uneasy alliance one of the different people from the family? That will be considered a large, large area of the second season.Gansa: Among the fun parts from year to year is finding where figures have traveled throughout however enough time has transpired. Situations are greatly at play during these characters' lives, and i believe we are able to find them in quite interesting moments, which we'll deliver on hopefully through the season. Is Showtime's Homeland TV's first publish-publish-9/11 show?Have you got a sense about the length of time may have passed between seasons at this time? Gordon: We simply have no idea yet.We heard reference to a mole within the Agency this year. Is the fact that plot still alive? Could it be in some way attached to the vice president's cover-from the drone attack?Gordon: Individuals are generally excellent questions. I believe the mole is certainly alive. Odds are we will have who that individual is next season. And [we'll also see] the dynamics within the CIA, concerning the cover-up that's happened. The vice president's suggested as a factor within this drone attack. The energy struggle that continues between Estes [David Harewood] and Saul will probably be all grist for that mill for that second season. The question hanging over this year was: "Is Brody a terrorist?" Have you got a similar story engine at the middle of Season 2?Gordon: "The way Barbara learn how to suspect Brody again?" That's really the central question from the second season, however we choose to tell the storyline. Carrie's likely to in some way have to determine that they was right in the end which Brody is within some sense a menace to the nation, although in different ways. She's going to need to stop him, the guy that they loves.Earlier you stated that Brody includes a opportunity for redemption. Despite the fact that he's wiped out Tom Master (Chris Chalk), might he still abandon the reason?Gordon: Obviously. But Brody's mission won't be another terrorist attack. His mission will probably be a lot more insidious than that. It is going to possess a different dynamic than this year clearly. But the potential of redemption is up for grabs. What have you think about Homeland's finale?

FX passed on the project but later developed Sutter's Sons, which ICM packaged and recently concluded its 4th season as a big hit for the network. "FX was obligated to pay Zito the reasonable value of his ideas, hire him to work on the series and afford him screen credit as creator," the lawsuit alleged. "Defendants breached an implied-in-fact contract with defendant." The judge relied on declarations submitted by Sutter, Landgraf and talent agent Matt Solo (now with WME), among others, showing Sutter's development process and the fact that Sons was pitched to several networks, including HBO and AMC, before arriving at FX, which bought the project in a bidding war. Lindsay Lohan Back To Court For Probation Update

First Published: December 14, 2011 8:53 AM EST Credit: Getty Premium LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Caption Lindsay Lohan is seen at the LAX Courthouse after her probation was revoked in Los Angeles on October 19, 2011Lindsay Lohan is due in court Wednesday to give a judge her first progress update under strict new probation requirements intended to keep close tabs on the troubled actress. Lohan has been reporting regularly for work at the Los Angeles County morgue since being repeatedly threatened with a long jail sentence if she failed to complete the terms of her probation, which include community service and counseling sessions. The hearing is without the usual drama that precedes Lohans recent court appearances, which have focused on the actress shortcomings by missing court-ordered therapy sessions and getting booted from a community service assignment at a womens shelter. The Mean Girls star spent less than five hours at a jail last month as part of a 30-day sentence imposed by Judge Stephanie Sautner for Lohans continued misbehavior. The judge is requiring the starlet to report on her progress monthly and it appears Lohan has been successful in meeting the goals of Wednesdays hearing. Shes been doing fine, Deputy Chief Coroner Ed Winter said Tuesday, saying the actress has been showing up, working and leaving without incident. He said he did not know how many hours Lohan had completed. Her spokesman, Steve Honig, said Lohan has met or exceeded the terms of her probation imposed by Sautner last month. Shes working very diligently to keep up her days so she can finish up with probation, he said. Lohan remains on probation for a 2007 drunken driving case and a misdemeanor grand theft case filed after she took a $2,500 necklace without permission. She has consistently struggled with the terms of her various sentences, which have included jail terms, rehab, community service and counseling. Her appearance Wednesday comes days before a Playboy issue featuring Lohan in a mostly-nude pictorial hits newsstands. The magazine was forced to release the issue online early after photos of the Marilyn Monroe-inspired spread leaked out online. Copyright 2011 by The Associated Press. All rights reserved. STUNNER! Legendary Pictures Postpones The month of january Oncoming Of Alex Proyas-Directed Paradise Lost

EXCLUSIVE: Legendary Pictures has stopped intends to begin production early the coming year on Paradise Lost, the epic-sized Alex Proyas-directed film concerning the fight between good and evil that's inspired through the John Milton poem. Bradley Cooper have been set to experience Lucifer, Benjamin Master to experience the archangel Michael, and Diego Boneta playing Adam and Camilla Belle Eve, with a number of other stars arranged for that action epic. I’m told the film isn’t scrapped rather, Legendary’s Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and producer Vincent Newman continues developing it to change a financial budget which had passed the $120 million mark by 10% or 15%. The image has crewed up to have an Australia shoot and also the talent and beneath the lines are researching the postponement at this time. Films including Moneyball and American Gangster had their plugs drawn inside a month of production and returned back, but it's always a surprise whenever a large film has its own start date scratched so near to production, even when it's temporary. I’m relayed through associates this process has been compared towards the Lone Ranger, which Disney had initially scheduled to start production last fall, until Deadline revealed last August that it absolutely was unplugged abruptly, with Disney threatening to scrap it since the studio feared your budget would are a runaway train and may sail past $250 million. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski labored to create lower individuals costs through alterations in the script plus they and The Actor-brad Pitt made changes within their deals to create the film lower close to $215 million. Within the situation of Paradise Lost, there's a lot eco-friendly screen work and VFX the budget looked to become getting unwieldy. They'll attempt to rework individuals costs and perhaps obtain the film into production through the late spring or early summer time. Waiting for an answer from Legendary Pictures, but several sources have confirmed the postponement.

B.O. hosts quiet party for 'New Year's'

'New Year's Eve'A paltry $13.7 million opening for Warner Bros.' "New Year's Eve" party could not rouse what's the worst weekend overall in the domestic box office in 3 years. Overseas B.O. was much less dire, as Vital-DreamWorks Animation's "Puss in Boots" rallied having a chart-topping believed $45.six million. Although the star-powered ensembler still handled to conquer twentieth century Fox's new entry "The Sitter," which collected $ten million, Warners expected "New Year's Eve" hitting around $20 million for that weekend. "The Sitter" carried out consistent with pre-weekend forecasts. Stateside B.O., amassing within the mid-to-high-$70 millions, was lower even from last weekend's typically sluggish publish-Thanksgiving frame, at $81 million. In addition, B.O. conditions weren't this off because the weekend of Sept. 5, 2008, when overall totals arrived at just $67.9 million. "It's rare this week would fall below last week,Inch stated Warner domestic distribution chief Serta Fellman, who added that large game titles starting next weekend, for example "A Virtual Detective: A Game Title of Shadows" and "Alvin and also the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked," is going to be an essential test for that industry. Prior to overseas summer break, "Puss in Boots" added 16 areas a few days ago, including top market Germany, which led $7.two million. Toon has cumed $142.3 million worldwide. While Stateside wide releases mostly fell short, the weekend's crop of niche game titles, brought by Focus Features' "Mess Tailor Soldier Spy," arrived strong. "Tailor" obtained the year's third-greatest per-screen average for any traditional theatrical release, amassing an believed average of $75,184 from four locations. ("Night time in Paris" and "The Tree of Existence" hold 2011's best per-screen perfs, correspondingly.) Componen, meanwhile, did well with Jason Reitman's black comedy "Youthful Adult," which released limited to have an believed three-day gross of $320,000. That's typically $40,000 from eight engagements. "Youthful Adult" must have a powerful female fanbase, based on Componen marketing and distribution mind Megan Colligan. That's one reason Componen made the decision to produce the film limited, before growing to roughly 1,000 locations next weekend. "It certainly is tricky with females within the days prior to Christmas," Colligan stated. "With 'Young Adult,' I believe it is important that we are not at 3,000 locations next weekend. "This can be a film that requires room to develop.Inch In comparison, "New Year's Eve" skewed heavily toward women, which repped 70% from the film's opening. The film delayed, however, with under-18 auds, just 22%. Contact Andrew Stewart at andrew.stewart@variety.com

Time Warner Cable CFO: 'We're Not in The Content Business' Despite Lakers Deal

NY - Cable giant Time Warner Cable this year struck a 20-year content deal with the L.A. Lakersnot because it wants to be more of a content company, but because it wanted to have more control over rising programming costs, CFO Irene Estevessaid here Monday.our editor recommendsLakers' Kobe Bryant to Play in Italy During NBA LockoutTime Warner Cable Mulls Bid for L.A. Dodgers TV Rights (Report) She also told a UBS media investor conference that broadband video competition to pay TV operators has been "a complement to our TV offering." She added: "It's not been a threat." If online video providers keep growing usage, "we have this wonderful hedge" in cable's broadband services, Esteves said. In that context, she said that usage-based pricing for broadband services will become a reality sooner or later. She emphasized that charging heavy broadband users more would be in line with pricing strategies in other industries and allow the firm to give consumers the option to pay less if they use less. She said TWC wants to introduce usage-based pricing "the right way rather than quickly" though. Earlier in the day, Comcast CFO Michael Angelakis said his company wasn't opposed to usage-based pricing, but sees no immediate need to "nickel and dime" customers. Esteves also told Wall Street on Monday that "we are not happy with our video losses." The firm is looking at new bundling opportunities and a better customer experience to address the issue, she said. Discussing the Lakers deal, which is reportedly worth $3 billion, Esteves said: "We're really dealing with the programming costs" and "incredible" sports cost increases, along with broadcast retransmission fees. "We're getting hit on all sides." The Lakers deal was an opportunity to take out the middle-man. "We're not in the content business," Esteves emphasized though. "We don't particularly want to be." But buying the Lakers rights was the lowest-cost option for TWC and allowed it to avoid "being held hostage on sports programming," she said. Reports recently said the firm will also look at a possible similar deal with the LA Dodgers. Programming costs have risen 8 percent for the past two full years, and 2011 will be in the same ballpark, the CFO said. Is cable still a growth business? "The short answer is yes," Esteves said. She cited the "terrific growth engines" of broadband and business services. And she highlighted that 2012 advertising sales should benefit from the U.S. elections and the Olympics. Asked about the TV Essentials program bundle for economically sensitive TV subscribers, Esteves said it has helped provide consumers a lower-priced option, but also given TW Cable the ability to talk to consumers. "We have been able to upsell them" when they call about TV Essentials, she said. "It's been very successful." Related Topics Time Warner Cable Los Angeles Lakers

Top Chef's Chuy: I Understood I Had Been Screwed

Chuy Valencia Chuy Valencia won the very first two elimination challenges on the top Chef, but he could not turn it into a three-peat moss. Rather, the Chicago-based chef got the boot after overcooking his fish with goat cheese dish. "I understood I had been screwed and so i was expecting it," he informs TVGuide.com. "It's difficult to forgive overcooking something." Discover when he recognized everything choose to go wrong and why he's happy he got removed.Top Chef's Richie: I wasn't thinking clearlyThe idol judges usually punish the overcooked dish, however they appeared to become pretty harsh on all everyone. Made it happen seem like it close between your four individuals or have you think it would be you?Chuy: Prior to the episode [broadcast], I figured it might be so apparent that it might be me, however when I viewed it, it did appear like these were evenly grilling the 4 people. I'm not sure. Standing there, they critiqued many of us, however i wasn't surprised it had been me. I understood I f---erectile dysfunction up, so whatever. [Laughs] It's what it's.How have you finish up overcooking the fish?Chuy: Well, I believe I should have just selected a dish [that needed] less focus on detail, something simpler to complete for the reason that period of time. I needed to make filling and perform a large amount of butchering, plating these little pouches. It had been certainly a lower-to-the-last-minute kind of factor for me personally and also at the finish you simply kind of start having a panic attack. I left it far too lengthy within the oven, so rather than it coming to a medium temperature, it had been overcooked. I totally realise why I went home. The dish was overcooked. There is no making your way around that. It isn't a large deal, but it is something, obviously, I learned from. It had been still fun to participate the entire factor in the finish.Top Chef's Keith: I understood Sarah and Lindsay would throw me underneath the busWhen have you understand it was overcooked?Chuy: I understood it had been overcooked after i got them out, but It was more after [the service] which i recognized how bad it may be. Whenever we were cleaning and packing our knives and becoming ready for elimination, I recall seeing the pouches around the dining room table also it appeared as if nobody really ate a lot of it, and so i type of figured I would be in route out.Tom seemed incredulous that you simply get this to dish at the restaurant.Chuy: [Laughs] Yeah, we make versions from it with sockeye fish or trout. They often sell perfectly, but clearly inside a restaurant you've additional time to give consideration and do things instead of when you are inside a competition of the character.Have you pick this dish since you understood it?Chuy: Kind of. It had been something I had been confident with. But additionally, because the party was type of family style, I felt like everybody might have their very own individual pouch rather than picking stuff up from the primary plate. It might be less work with the visitors. How annoyed had you been that the bromance with Chris C. ended this early?Chuy: If only I [had] remained longer, but it is awesome. I really like Chris and Chris Johnson from Chicago and Ty-Lor. They are all really awesome men. I did not want some of individuals men to visit home. They are awesome. I am talking about, you may think Chris C. may be among individuals stuck-up, good-searching California men or whatever, but he's a very awesome, lower-to-earth individual. I am glad I met everybody. I type of was happy it was me departing rather than them because I really like them and that i would like them to complete well. It had been like being a member of a fraternity almost. Is larger better? 5 things to understand about Top Chef: TexasI'm annoyed you left because I needed to listen to more tales regarding your father making stuff.Chuy: [Laughs] Oh, you will find much more tales! Maybe I'll tweet one out every week. ... My dad's one of individuals men that simply does everything themself. He never bought anything. He was that guy. He did all of the gardening, made cabinets, furniture, colored and roofed the home. He labored crazy hrs at his job. He's upon the market now, but he's still making stuff and doing the hardwood in the home. He's an exciting-around renovator.Does he have that handlebar mustache?Chuy: Oh, totally! Well, it does not possess the handle any longer, but it is still a awesome mustache. What exactly are you so far?Chuy: I am still at Chilam Balam. It's certainly been more busy here. I am attempting to figure exactly what the next factor is, maybe expand with a brand new restaurant or bar or perhaps a food truck. Just seeing what else I'm able to use time.

Ratings could grow inside a couple of days, without baseball breathing lower its neck. George Clooney's Problem (Try Not To Have A Pity Party for Him!)

This story first made an appearance within the November. 4 problem from the Hollywood Reporter.our editor recommendsGeorge Clooney Are Only Able To Be Out-Pranked By Kaira Pitt States DamonNY Film Festival: George Clooney Hits 'The Descendants' Premiere With Stacy KeiblerGeorge Clooney States He Will not Run For Office (Video)Dems versus. Republicans: Stars they Wont Pay to determine Movies They Hate and Love (Poll) George Clooney can get to invest considerable time within the shower throughout the approaching several weeks. Oscar campaigning makes him "kind of feel unclean," he bellyached a couple of several weeks back. Or was that simply a mock complaint? With Clooney, a significant guy (witness his campaign against genocide in Sudan) that has perfected the knack of never seeming to consider themself too seriously, you won't ever fully realize. However when it involves juggling competing honours campaigns, Clooney is on familiar ground. Six years back, he'd two politically designed films in play: Syriana (by which he starred) and Night, and Best Of Luck (that they co-authored, directed and behaved in). He handled to split his marketing efforts between your two, without slighting either. PHOTOS: George Clooney: Career in Pictures The end result would be a combined eight Academy nominations for that two movies, with Clooney obtaining mentions for pointing and co-writing Night and taking home the supporting actor Oscar for his worn-lower CIA agent in Syriana. This season, it's less than deja vu once again. However the pattern is comparable. Clooney has one movie, the backroom political drama The Ides of March, he co-authored, directed and created as well as in that they includes a supporting role like a governor with presidential aspirations. And that he has another, author-director Alexander Payne's The Descendants, by which Clooney stars like a guy battling to help keep both his immediate and relatives from spinning unmanageable. PHOTOS: The Scene in the Venice Film Festival Getting two films up for consideration can present problems. This past year, Leonardo DiCaprio, an even more reticent public personality than Clooney, attempted to voice equal support for Shutter Island and Beginning. But rather than being named best actor for either, he was famous for neither. Clooney doesn't face that predicament, though. The groups by which he'll contend are clearly delineated. In Descendants, he's in the forefront. In Ides, he's supplying support to Ryan Gosling's political operative -- actually, Clooney's character didn't even come in happens experience that the movie relies. States among Clooney's affiliates, "The 2 movies are two completely different canvasses." Furthermore, The new sony, which opened up Ides on March. 7, and Fox Searchlight, which will start to unveil Descendants on November. 18, happen to be playing nice around the festival circuit: Ides opened in Venice Telluride got Descendants both movies tested on successive nights in Toronto and London and Descendants was congratulated because the closing-nightfeature in the NY Film Festival. Clooney assigned the very first phase of his honours bid by accepting Actor of the season honorsfor Descendants in the Hollywood Film Honours on March. 24. Will both movies go the length? Right now, Descendants, that also acquired three Gotham noms, looks to become building momentum. Ides, which made a decent $24 million through its first couple of weekends of release, is just one of several high-profile nominees The new sony will area, but Descendants is shaping as charge card within the pack of Searchlight's honours hopefuls. Fox's niche unit intends to send about 30,000 screeners towards the industry's honours groups. But even when Clooney doesn't ultimately get writing or pointing Oscar noms for Ides -- and that he faces stiff competition in individuals groups -- the truth that the chance has been talked about contributes to his gravitas, strengthening his bid for Descendants. It's the same as what rocket researchers call the slingshot effect: Send a spacecraft on the quick loop around a distant planet, and also the planet's gravitational pressure will hurl the spacecraft farther into space. Voters astounded by Clooney's performance in Descendants could be even much more when reminded of his work behind your camera in Ides. Instead of eliminating one another out, the films could equal to a highly effective one-two punch, with Clooney proving itself to be the very best actor victor. Warner Bros. Wins Round in Fight with Superman Lawyer

Timothy A. Clay/AFP/Getty Images The suit introduced by Warner Bros. against attorney Marc Toberoff for allegedly disturbing contracts over privileges to Superman continues. On Tuesday,a California federal judge declined Toberoff's make an effort to strike the suit on First Amendment grounds. PHOTOS: Top Ten Summer time Superheroes ever: Fight of Box Office Brawn Warner Bros. introduced the suit after many years of fighting the estates of Superman co-creatorsJerry Siegel andJoe Shuster, symbolized by Toberoff. The estates have largely been effective in taking advantage of the termination provisions from the U.S. Copyright Act so that they can wrestle back treatments for the lucrative Superman franchise. So this year, Warners performed a brand new proper counter-attack by filing a tortious interference suit against Toberoff, quarrelling the parties had nearly performed funds agreement in 2002 before Toberoff placed themself in to the situation unlawfully. Particularly, the studio pointed to contracts using the Shusters produced by among Toberoff's companies, Off-shore Pictures Corporation, in which a partnership was established to take advantage of the Shusters' privileges. In reaction, Toberoff filed an anti-SLAPP motion, stating that Warners' gambit violated First Amendment protections like the to petition. PHOTOS: Comic Figures in Dispute The parties posted 1000's of pages showing their particular sides. Warners introduced a variety of contracts and correspondence from greater than a decade ago in order to show Toberoff was involved with a sly ploy "made to discontinue [the estates'] dealings with Electricity Comics and Warner Bros" and win privileges for their own company. Meanwhile, on the threshold matter, Toberoff stated he was basically carrying out legal responsibilities and Warners didn't have to impinge his constitutional protected activity. For the time being, U.S. District Court judge Otis Wright II has given Warners the advantage, discovering that Toberoff's motion to strike fails because "while such protected activity may evidence the alleged interference, it doesn't shield it." The judge finds "logic" in Warners' arguments that Toberoff interfered using the studio's privileges within prior 1992 agreement by striking his Off-shore Pictures deal nearly ten years later. The judge states Toberoff has unsuccessful in the initial burden to show the claims came about from protected activity. ' Obviously, the ruling will not make any measurement from the merits of Warners' claims. Getting unsuccessful to determine the very first prong underneath the anti-SLAPP statute, Judge Wright doesn't evaluate the following prong -- Warners' probability of success within this situation. Toberoff will probably convey more possibilities tobeat the situation within the pre-trial phase or win the situation before a jury. But for the time being, Warner Bros. will get a little win -- although hard-fought against -- and will get the situation past its first roadblock. We've arrived at to Toberoff for comment and can update having a response. E-mail: eriqgardner@yahoo.com Twitter: @eriqgardner

SAG-AFTRA Merger Talks Progress

The committees charged with forming a plan to merge the Screen Actors Guild and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists wrapped their third official meeting Wednesday night in Los Angeles. In a joint statement, SAG president Ken Howard and AFTRA president Roberta Reardon called the meeting "remarkably productive," adding, "We made solid progress across the full spectrum of issues we have to consider."The statement did not go into detail as to what those issues are. Both unions have been tight-lipped regarding the specifics of merger, including how a new union would be structured, what its name would be, and how its formation would impact the unions' pension and health plans.Speaking to Back Stage in August, prior to the committees' second official meeting, SAG president Ken Howard noted that the pension and health plans are independent organizations whose trustees are appointed by the unions and employers. "Once we have merged, they have a fiduciary responsibility to do what is best for them and for the union," Howard said. "And so I'm very confident that what they will do, therefore, will be very effective and very good for us." He also emphasized that vested pensions are protected by federal law. "That can't go away," he said. The SAG-Producers Pension and Health Plans announced increases this week to the minimum earnings required to qualify for participation. The plans cited the weakness of the financial markets and recent declines in employer contributions from scripted network prime-time television as motivating factors for the hikes. AFTRA has, in recent years, grown to dominate network prime time, creating a jurisdictional battle that Howard indicated could be solved by merger. "Finally all of that revenue is coming into place" post-merger, he said, "and can be dealt with under one big organization."A formal plan to merge the two unions is expected to be finalized early next year. It will then be presented to the respective unions' boards of directors for approval, then to members for a ratification vote.

Electronic Media: Parents Urged To Limit Exposure For Kids Under 2

Study: Fast-Paced Cartoons No Good For Kids’ Brains – Sorry SpongeBob As many as 90% of children under the age of 2 are exposed to some form of electronic media every day, and American Academy of Pediatrics says these kids are better off engaging in unstructured play time and interacting with other humans — not media screens — and at this age they are already watching as much as two hours a day. TV that is on in the background is also detrimental, according to the policy statement. The pediatricians group first issued recommendations on media use for children under age 2 in 1999, essentially discouraging TV viewing. More is known today about childrens early brain development and the best ways to help them learn. Among the pediatricians’ conclusions: Unstructured play time is more valuable for the developing brain than electronic media. Children learn to think creatively, problem solve, and develop reasoning and motor skills at early ages through unstructured, unplugged play. Free play also teaches them how to entertain themselves. Parents who watch TV or videos with their child may add to the childs understanding, but children learn more from live presentations than from televised ones. So-called “educational television” isn’t as beneficial as parents may think it is. Many video programs for infants and toddlers are marketed as educational, yet evidence does not support this. Young children learn best fromand needinteraction with humans, not screens. When parents are watching their own programs, this is background media for their children. It distracts the parent and decreases parent-child interaction. Its presence may also interfere with a young childs learning from play and activities. Television viewing around bedtime can cause poor sleep habits and irregular sleep schedules, which can adversely affect mood, behavior and learning.

Fringe Scoop: Peter Returns... But Nobody Takes note of Him!

Joshua Jackson Peter is returning - and earlier than we thought! Poor Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson). He apparently disappeared into nothing after serving his purpose and joining together the 2 galaxies within the Season 3 finale of Fringe. Now, once he is doing return, nobody will remember who he's, and can really think he's as crazy as Walter. (The apple does not fall not even close to the tree, right?) Fringe Bosses: Peter never been around, however the last three seasons still did "The thing is a guy return to some existence the ones he understood, but they do not know him," Anna Torv states of Peter's return. "He's a stranger to everybody, except they know a lot of things.Inch Although the Fringe Division does not remember who Peter Bishop is, he still maintains his reminiscences of these. "It truly is as if he never been around," Lance Reddick states. "Then when he turns up declaring each one of these things and knowing each one of these things, it is freaky. Broyles' attitude is the fact that it is possible what he's saying holds true, however the last place I am likely to go would be to believe him... a minimum of in the beginning." Reddick was coy to express whether which means they'll lock Peter up for his crazy ideas, but Peter will ultimately earn their trust. "It needs to achieve a place where there's a lot validity towards the information he has and exactly how he helps, that with time, he's given increasingly more trust and increasingly more freedom to use, work and help." Gallery: Which Television shows leaped the shark last season? Attaining the trust of Olivia, who may never have put much belief in anybody, is a different animal altogether, extending -- what we should believe to become -- an eventual reconciliation between your pair. "Within this timeline, Olivia does not know who he's, as well as in Peter's timeline, it required them a very long time to obtain together, so..." Torv states having a laugh, understanding fans' frustrations. Even if Peter returns, he might possess some competition within this universe's Lincoln subsequently (Seth Gabel), who's universal counterpart had feelings for Bolivia. "It appears to become happening again," Gabel states. "Initially, when Lincoln subsequently met Olivia within our world, clearly the circumstances were very intense for the reason that his partner only agreed to be wiped out, however they immediately had an excellent connection and grew to become partners pretty rapidly and located they really saw eye-to-eye. Once we complement, we'll observe that relationship open a bit more.Inch "Individuals feelings appear to mix galaxies," Gabel continues, observing that Alt-Lincoln's feelings for Bolivia will also be still intact despite a significant alternation in the timeline. "Clearly the timeline is a little different now and she or he did not finish up getting an infant, so that they did not have that moment when he stated 'I adore you,A but that love, In my opinion, remains,Inch he states. "Alt-Lincoln subsequently certainly continues to have feelings on her, which she bounces off as, 'Oh yeah, you are an excellent kid.' That certainly continues." Fringe Finale: Guess who never been around? Talking about the infant, it isn't likely that Henry will go back to the series unless of course the timeline reverts back. "It isn't possible if they have never met," Torv states of Peter and Bolivia's baby. "Unless of course we finish up returning towards the other timeline, which might happen." Despite Lincoln's growing presence, Gabel demands that his character isn't there to exchange Peter. "It has been a large factor that i can have Lincoln subsequently not be an issue that's threatening to exchange Peter," he states. "Clearly, with the possible lack of Peter, that concept is threatening towards the audience and the field of Fringe. Peter's a voice the show needs and definitely can not be changed, that's there to become above everything, and simultaneously, greatly inside it, and ultimately, the hero which will save it, because he did last season. When it comes to Lincoln subsequently and Peter returning, I believe there's certainly room for they both.Inch Fringe airs Fridays at 9/8c on Fox.

A Codeblack Entertainment release of a Hartbeat Prods. and Codeblack Entertainment production in association with Usual Suspects Prods. and Comedy Central Films. Produced by Jeff Clanagan. Executive producers, Kevin Hart, Dave Becky. Co-producer, Quincy Newell. Directed by Leslie Small. Co-director, Kevin Hart. Special segment director, Tim Story. Screenplay, Hart, Harry Ratchford, Joey Wells. With: Kevin Hart, Taraji P. Henson, Will "Spank" Horton, Harry Ratchford, Na'im Lynn, Dwayne Brown, Nate Smith, Joey Wells, Larry King.Comedian Kevin Hart's hybrid standup film "Laugh at My Pain" is at its best when it takes that title to heart. Riding a deserved wave of popularity on the comedy circuit, Hart can unveil a sex gag with the best of them, but it's his gimlet-eyed take on his own rather unfunny troubles -- a drug-addict father, a recently deceased mother, a divorce -- that mark him as a funnyman worthy of attention. Rolled out in the U.S. Sept. 9 with a nontraditional African release to follow, pic should score more exposure in ancillary. Opening with a warmly funny bio on the star (a bit in which he returns, a boastful conquering hero, to his old Philly 'hood, despite a total lack of recognition from local characters, is a riot), the meat of the film is the diminutive standup's high-energy performance at Los Angeles' Nokia Theater, limned with live-wire explosiveness and pizzaz. A strange scripted segment follows, casting Hart and his buddies (including Taraji P. Henson) in a largely forgettable "Reservoir Dogs" parody that can (and should) be comfortably clipped for broadcast.Camera (color); editors, A.J. Dickerson, Spencer Averick; production designer, Bruce Ryan; costume designer, Shilla Benning; art director, Larry Wiemer. Reviewed at Clarity screening room, Beverly Hills, Aug. 4, 2011. Danny Torrance versus. vampires of the underworld from the underworld!Reading through with an excerpt from his latest work-in-progress inside a George Mason College event, Stephen King has confirmed what's extended been mentioned: he's indeed writing a follow-up to his early classic The Shining.Clearly this isn't strictly movie news, but due to the fame and infamy of Stanley Kubrick's 1980 Shining adaptation (King has not been a follower, and oversaw their very own TV miniseries inside the the 19 nineties), it's as near to dammit. Watch how quickly the completely new novel can get acquired for your screen. The first involved youthful Danny Torrance and also the imaginary friend Tony ("the boy that lives throughout my mouth") trading a hellish winter within the Overlook Hotel along with his author father Jack, who's progressively losing his mind: the fantastic question for you is when the hotel is haunting Jack or Jack is haunting the resort. Either in situation, it doesn't finish well.Danny does survive the ordeal though, which is his story the brand new book, Dr Sleep, builds up in the adult years. Handful of particulars are actually revealed up to now, nevertheless the excerpt that King read within the George Mason event featured a roving troop of vampires of the underworld from the underworld referred to as Tribe.Danny versus. vampires of the underworld from the underworld? It seems initially being an idea from exit of leftfield, but we'd declare that what's likely is niagra is an additional publish-Dark Tower instance of King tying his world together: not just a Shining follow-up alone, but basically a completely new novel that suddenly transpires with include Danny Torrance. Not long ago there has been whispers of King writing a 'Salem's Lot follow-up together with a moving Father Callahan (another recurring character) with vampires of the underworld from the underworld along with you. Could Dr Sleep be that same book?Much being learned then, but it's OK, King produces fast. Albanian Oscar choice sparks 'Blood' feud

MOSCOW -- A choice to choose American director Joshua Marston's "Forgiveness of Bloodstream" as Albania's Oscar submission has sparked a proper protest in the director of among the local films that unsuccessful to create the cut. Bujar Alimani, whose film "Amnesty" was 1 of 3 other challengers, is advocating the Oscar selection committee in the Albanian National Center of Cinematography to disqualify Marston's film for the reason that it's a majority U.S. production. Inside a letter towards the committee, Alimani authored: " 'Forgiveness of Blood' does not fulfil all of the necessary needs through the Academy since its director and co-author are American, along with other key creative components like cinematographer, music composer and editor are American people too.Inch There have been three other Albanian films that met the committee's own selection criteria, Alimani stated. "I strongly protest this decision since clearly the details of mine and Joshua's production credits happen to be overlooked and falsified through the determining committee," he alleges. "I request that you simply disqualify 'Forgiveness of Blood' from consideration inside your nomination which you instruct the committee in Albania to satisfy again making its decision in line with the criteria set because of your academy. " There is no immediate response in the selection committee, which in fact had made obvious the reason why because of its choice once the decision was released. The committee, comprised of film industry professionals, Teodor Laco, Esat Musliu, Bujar Lako, Durim Neziri and Agron Tufa, mentioned the film was Albanian language, among the screenwriters, Andamion Murataj, was Albanian, as was the whole cast, the co-producer Lissus Media is Albanian, and the majority of the crew, and also the film was shot positioned on location in Albania. They added: "The film continues to be well accepted through the audience and experts alike for that original and fresh method of an problem still highly relevant to society.Inch Your decision has sparked a media storm within the small Balkans condition that lies to northern A holiday in greece and it has a barren, Adriatic shoreline left largely undeveloped 2 decades following the collapse of Enver Hoxha's paranoid and secretive professional-Chinese communist regime. Writing in Tirana newspaper Shekulli, journalist Elsa Demo said: "(There's) a suspicion the true decision-makers are the type who include an inferiority complex along with a contempt for that creative people of the country." Your decision tricked "the concept that an overseas director can better represent Albania," Demo stated. "That in some way 'The Forgiveness of Blood' gives really the only opportunity for the united states to step-up towards the greatest competitors around the final evening from the Academy awards." Kujtim Cashku, rector of Tirana's Marubi film school, told Variety: "The film continues to be recognized in Albania coupled with an excellent success. "Rather than coping with the exotic subject of Albanian bloodstream feuds -- the traditional system of revenge referred to as kanun -- it handles love and human relations, and just how Albanians digest rules of law that clash using the rules of kanun." The Mentalist: Has Patrick Jane Been Framed for Murder?

Simon Baker, The Mentalist The Mentalist's third season literally ended with a bang when Patrick Jane (Simon Baker) gunned down a man he believed to be Red John (Bradley Whitford), the serial killer who killed Jane's wife and child.Fall Preview: Get scoop on your favorite returning showsBut did he really kill Red John? "There's a lot of questions to be answered," creator Bruno Heller tells TVGuide.com of the Season 4 premiere (Thursday, 10/9c, CBS). "If that was Red John, then Red John was still one jump ahead of him because he was able to frame him for killing an innocent man."Indeed, Jane pleads that Red John was holding him at gunpoint and received a call from his mole, the now-deceased FBI Agent O'Loughlin (Eric Winter), just moments before the fatal shooting. Unfortunately for Jane, no record of the call exists and the gun was nowhere to be found at the crime scene. So the next stop for Jane is prison, which Heller says Jane actually finds...enjoyable. "He's actually quite comfortable in that world. He likes the solitude," Heller says."He had been kind of taking the prison stay as a kind of spa-relaxation time out. There's time for him to think, and when he realizes that the case is more complicated than Lisbon [Robin Tunney] and the rest of the guys can handle, he gets himself out."The Mentalist: Did Patrick Jane really kill Red John?Complicating matters for the team is that, because of their participation in Jane's hunt for Red John's mole, they have all been suspended. "The team is also in deep trouble because they essentially engineered a disaster," Heller says. "An FBI agent is dead. It's not that they're going to go to jail for O'Loughlin's murder, but the FBI doesn't take kindly to any kind of bad PR or mess that they're not in control of."That ultimately will lead to the hiring of a new CBI boss, Luther Wainright (Michael Rady). "He's a young guy who tries a completely different way of dealing with the CBI and Jane," Heller teases. "He's more a touchy-feely kind of guy. I think Jane finds it kind of refreshing. The guy's not stupid, and what Jane loves above anything else is a novel challenge. So any fresh target/victim/colleague/antagonist is meat and drink to him."Is that to suggest Jane, after perhaps killing his nemesis, will have a new spring in his step? Not necessarily. "It's definitely a different Jane, but just in the sense that time changes everyone," Heller says. "He's a wiser. He's learned that a whole new level of cunning and manipulation is going to be required to keep moving forward."Mentalist Scoop: Patrick Jane to lock horns with The Shield's Catherine Dent Could that mean that - gulp! - Red John is still out there? Did Jane really kill an innocent man? Heller promises that the premiere will give you a definitive answer. "By the end, we will at least know what Jane thinks," he says. "And Jane is a pretty smart guy."The Mentalist premieres Thursday at 10/9c on CBS. Watch a sneak peek of the premirere below:

I'm Yours

An Entertainment One (in Canada) release of a New Real Films production. Produced by Jennifer Jonas, Avi Federgreen, Mallary Davenport. Executive producer, John Hamilton. Directed, written by Leonard Farlinger. With: Rossif Sutherland, Karine Vanasse, Don McKellar, Nicolas Campbell.Even at 79 minutes, "I'm Yours" still manages to overstay its welcome. Entirely predictable and instantly forgettable, this formulaic road movie is all the drearier for following two traveling companions who, despite a steamy interlude in a motel room, generate precious little onscreen chemistry. Individually, leads Rossif Sutherland and Karine Vanasse hit random grace notes while struggling with sketchy roles and gaping plotholes, but they do little to distract from the shopworn contrivances of writer-director Leonard Farlinger's scenario. After a spin on the fest circuit, this Canadian comedy-drama will go nowhere fast. Robert (Sutherland), a Manhattan stockbroker mending after a recent heartbreak, enjoys a night of sexual healing with Daphne (Vanasse), a lovely stranger he meets in a bar. Come morning, however, Daphne blackmails him into joining her on a bus trip back to Northern Ontario, where she plans to introduce him to her long-estranged parents as her fiance. Little of what happens next is credible or compelling -- the inevitable happy ending is a logic-free zone -- but lenser Jonathon Cliff makes some of the Ontario locales appear quite attractive. Canadian viewers may enjoy the view of Northern Ontario locales. But pic won't travel well.Camera (color), Jonathon Cliff; editor, Matt Hannam; music, Ohad Benchetrit, Justin Small; music supervisor, Velma Barkwell; production designer, Steve Henry. Sigourney Weaver 'Not Holding Breath' For 'Ghostbusters 3'

Woe is the plight of the new "Ghostbusters" movie. Despite all the good intentions, the cast being excited to get together again, director Ivan Reitman onboard, and a script by "Year One" writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky in second draft stage, there's really no plan for when and if the production will begin. MTV News caught up with potential star Sigourney Weaver at the premiere of her new film "Abduction" last night to see if there was any new news to report about the film, and most importantly, if she'd heard anything from notoriously elusive Bill Murray. "I see Bill every now and then, [but] I'm not holding my breath," she admitted. "I'd like it to work out. I have about six movies coming out so I've been busy without thinking about it, but I hope we do do it." Weaver didn't seem too excited to talk about the project and its perpetual in limbo state, and we couldn't get her to speculate further on what the plot might revolve around. She once hinted that Murray's character Pete Venkman might appear in the movie as a slimer ghost, and that Oscar, her character's son from the second movie, would be a full-fledged Ghostbuster, which would be hilarious, but doubtful that it will come to be. Meanwhile one of the film's biggest cheerleaders, Dan Aykroyd, has said that they will proceed with or without Murray. "What we have to remember is that 'Ghostbusters' is bigger than any one component, although Billy was absolutely the lead and contributed to it in a massive way, as was the director and Harold [Ramis], myself and Sigourney [Weaver]." Aykroyd said. "The concept is much larger than any individual role and the promise of 'Ghostbusters 3' is that we get to hand the equipment and the franchise down to new blood." Will we ever see a new "Ghostbusters" movie? Tell us in the comments or on Twitter!

9 Milestones in the Evolution of Paul Rudd

In Our Idiot Brother, Paul Rudd plays the shaggy-haired titular character, a guy so naively idiotic that he hands a uniformed police officer marijuana after the cop claims to be having a bad day. How did Rudd transform himself from a socially conscious law student who romances his hot ex-stepsister in Clueless to a socially imbecilic drifter who yearns for his dog Willie Nelson? You can always trace a direct line through a few important roles to illustrate what led to an actor’s current success. As such, let’s look at nine pivotal performances that track the evolution of Paul Rudd. Clueless (1994) After a series of small parts in TV movies and a recurring role on the short-lived Fox sitcom Wild Oats, the University of Kansas graduate earned what would be his breakthrough part in Amy Heckerling’s ’90s gem Clueless. Rudd reportedly auditioned to play Murray (which went to Donald Faison), Elton (Jeremy Sisto) and Christian (Justin Walker), but Heckerling cast the 25-year-old as Alicia Silverstone’s onscreen ex-stepbrother and eventual love interest — a role that earned him the title of MTV audience crush object. Over a decade later, Rudd would re-team with Heckerling less successfully for the straight-to-DVD flop I Could Never Be Your Woman. Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995) Just two months later, Rudd (who was still being credited as Paul Stephen Rudd at the time) returned to the box office for his first leading role. In the sixth installment of the Halloween franchise, which was filmed before Clueless, the Kansas U. grad replaced Brian Andrews as Tommy Doyle, the adult version of the child that Laurie Strode babysat in the first Halloween film. Although critics hated the movie, it did decently at the box office, coming in second to David Fincher’s Se7en its opening weekend. Cider House Rules (1999) Four years later — after playing the object of Jennifer Aniston’s affection in, well, The Object of My Affection and appearing in MTV’s ensemble bomb 200 Cigarettes — Rudd earned his first role in a marquee drama. In Lasse Hallstrm’s adaptation of the best-selling novel of the same name, Rudd played Charlize Theron’s apple farm owner boyfriend who leaves her to fight in World War II. Cider House Rules would be the most critically successful drama of Rudd’s career and also his only Academy Award-winning title. (The film won Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for Michael Caine.) Wet Hot American Summer (2001) At this point in his career, Rudd was being recognized as a serviceable dramatic actor and romcom love interest but he had not yet had the chance to display his serious comedic talents. That would change with David Wain and Michael Showalter’s summer camp cult classic Wet Hot American Summer. Opposite Janeane Garofalo, David Hyde Pierce, Elizabeth Banks, Michael Ian Black, Bradley Cooper, Amy Poehler and more, Rudd played an inattentive boyfriend/lifeguard who rocks a sweet jean jacket. While the film received negative reviews at the time of its release, it has since accumulated a devoted following that is praying for a prequel.

As If! All of Cher Horowitz's Clueless Outfits in Under One Minute

Clueless is, without a doubt, the best dated movie of the ’90s. The lingo, costuming, and music are the stuff of time capsules, but the film itself feels like a righteous love letter to the post-grunge era. I revisit it whenever there’s a spare moment. In this new video, we see just how many outfits Beverly Hills teen Cher Horowitz (played with unwavering perfection by Alicia Silverstone) can squeeze into a 90-minute movie. Hint: It’s a lot. That’s 50 complete outfits. If I had to pick a favorite, I’d go with the yellow plaid blazer with matching yellow vest, but this is like picking between children. I’d sooner offer myself to the gestapo than choose between my Alaia and white Calvin Klein dress. Also: Shout-out to Elisa Donovan. You did underrated work in this movie. [via Jezebel]

Redmond ONeal Sentenced To One Year Of In-Patient Rehab Over Recent Arrest

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Redmond ONeal is heading back to rehab. The son of actor Ryan ONeal and the late Farrah Fawcett pleaded no contest to felony possession of heroin and being in possession of a firearm on Wednesday morning in Los Angeles, Access Hollywood has confirmed. As a result, a judge sentenced Redmond to a one-year, in-patient rehab program and five years of probation, the District Attorneys office confirmed to Access Hollywood. Redmond is grateful for the opportunity to receive additional intensive treatment, his lawyer, Richard Pintal, told Radar Online, which first reported the news. As previously reported on AccessHollywood.com, Redmond was arrested on Aug. 2 in Santa Monica. A spokesperson for the Santa Monica Police Department previously confirmed to Access that Redmond was pulled over at 8:45 AM on Aug. 2, for failing to stop at a red left turn arrow at Lincoln and Olympic. Redmond was pulled over at the 600 block of Olympic Drive, not too far from the police department. A motor officer determined ONeal was on probation, and therefore he had consent to search him and the vehicle he was driving, the spokesperson told Access. The officer found a controlled substance believed to be heroin in the car. Prosecutors charged Redmond days later with felony heroin possession.
